Petite Opera Embraces New Patrons

Petite Opera Productions is a charitable nonprofit professional arts company dedicated to creating life-changing experiences for the next generation patron of live opera and musical productions. We do this by presenting live, full-scale musical productions in various genres including opera, operetta, musical theatre and spooferettas™. All productions are presented in English. In addition, the company specializes in updates and translations of classical works and topical works important to today’s audiences.

Because of its approachability and focus on newcomers, patrons have dubbed Petite Opera Productions  “Opera with Training Wheels”.

In addition to selecting appropriate English translations of foreign works, Petite Opera boasts a dedicated team of librettists that update old favorites to modern language and settings. This team carefully selects appropriate language, emphasis and vowel settings that enhance the music and create three-dimensional characters. Examples include Domitri Toscas’ Cosi fan tutte — Everyone is just the same, updated to 1959 Chicago, where “MadMen met Mozart”; Petite Opera’s Magic Flute 3.0—A Space Opera set in North Woods USA and lending an alien dimension to Mozart’s beloved characters; and #metoo Don Giovanni, set in modern-day Hollywood.

The company casts complete performers—classically-trained vocalists who create deep characterizations and dance/move well—and volunteer chorus, orchestra and dancers from the community.  Each production runs for 6 or more performances in an intimate space. The company takes a cross-over approach to all genre performed.

Why are we Petite Opera Productions? Well, we chose the name to represent the small, intimate setting in which we present our works. But there is nothing petite about our production quality, our featured talent, or our dedication to introducing new audiences to the works we produce.
